Working in the Health Sector Essay Example
Working in the Health Sector Essay The job role of a midwife is to provide advice, care and support for women and their babies during pregnancy, labour and the early postnatal period. They help women make their own decisions about the care and services they access. Their responsibilities are wide ranging and include; caring for new-born children, providing health education and parenting support immediately after delivery, until care is transferred to a health visitor. Midwives are personally responsible for the health of both mother and baby and only refer to obstetricians if there are medical complications. They work in multidisciplinary teams in both hospital, and increasingly, in community health care settings. Midwives do a multitude of duties, all the while adhering to hospital policy and maintaining an awareness of issues such as health and safety, examples of these duties are; diagnosing, monitoring and examining women during pregnancy, developing, assessing and evaluating individual programmes of care, providing full antenatal care, including screening tests in hospital, in the community and at home. Midwives identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to doctors and other medical specialists, they arrange and provide counselling and advice before and after screening and tests. They offer support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth and neonatal death. They supervise and assist mothers in labour, monitoring the condition of the foetus and use knowledge of drugs and pain management, they give support and advice on the daily care of the baby including breastfeeding, bathing and making up feeds. Throughout their careers they engage in professional development to meet PREP requirements, and they participate in the training and supervision of junior colleagues. To become a midwife, you need to have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, typically including English Language/Literature and a science subject and either two or three A Levels or equivalent. Some trusts run cadet schemes which can lead to entry onto a pre-registration programme in midwifery. These are increasingly being replaced by apprenticeships. You need to do an approved degree in midwifery at University to become a midwife. You need certain personal qualities to be a midwife and these include; Having an understanding and caring nature. Having the ability to get on well with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Having emotional and mental strength. Having good observational skills. Having the ability to act on your own initiative. Having patience and tact. Being mature. Having a willingness to take responsibility. Having the ability to cope with distressing situations and to remain calm in stressful situations. Being able to counsel and having listening and general communication skills which are essential. Having excellent people skills. Having the ability to inspire trust and confidence. Having respect for the needs of families from a variety of different cultures. Having strong teamwork skills and the initiative to work alone. Having physical and mental stamina. Most newly-qualified midwives move quickly to permanent posts within health and social care with potential to progress within their career to clinical specialists, consultant midwives, practice and development roles, quality assurance or management roles. On the career framework midwives are a level 5, this is the level most registered practitioners in their first and second post-registration/professional qualifications jobs. Midwives usually work 37. 5 hours per week, including evening, weekend and night shifts and they can work in various places including hospital maternity units, GP surgeries, Midwife led Units and Birth Centres. In some hospitals/NHS Trusts you would split your time between working in the community and working in hospitals, or rotate between antenatal, delivery and postnatal tasks every 6 months. The job role of a nurse is to plan and provide medical and nursing care to patients in hospital, at home or in other settings who are suffering who are suffering from both chronic and acute physical or mental ill health. The responsibilities of a nurse include; assessing and planning nursing care requirements, providing pre and post operation care, monitoring and administering medication and IV infusions, taking patient samples, pulses, temperatures and blood pressure. Nurses write records, supervise junior staff, organizing workloads, provide emotional support to patients and relatives and tutor student nurses. Currently these are no national minimum academic entry requirements into nursing courses so every Higher Education Institute sets its own criteria. You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, plus two or three A Levels or equivalent to get onto a degree course. To become a nurse, you need to have completed a degree in nursing. Aswell as these academic requirements to be a nurse you must possess these personal qualities; Excellent people skills Good verbal and written communication skills Good observation skills. Ability to answer questions and give advice. Be happy to work as part of a team. Be able to deal with emotionally charged situations Have care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. Good health and fitness. Resilience Stamina Nurses usually work a standard 37. 5 hours per week, this is worked in a variety of ways depending on the role and location, it is usually morning, noon or nights shift rotations, and depending on the availability of registered nurses overtime might be required. Both nurses and midwives must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, this is a prerequisite of employment and practice, and must maintain their registration by meeting the NMCââ¬â¢s post-registration education and practice (PREP) standards. Not meeting these requirements will cause registration to lapse and you will not be able to work as a registered practitioner. There are two separate PREP standards that affect registration, these are the PREP continuing of professional development (CPD) standard and the PREP (practice) standard. . M1: Assess how a health worker can contribute to providing a positive experience for users of health services. Midwives having excellent people skills contributes to providing a positive experience for service users because having babies happens to all sorts of people, so being a midwife you would be providing professional support and reassurance to a huge diversity of women, during some of the most emotionally-intense periods of their lives. Being able to communicate and get along with people from all walks of life is essential. For example; a mother from a different country doesnââ¬â¢t speak English very well, if the midwife just didnââ¬â¢t make as much effort at conversation with this lady, the lady might feel left out, slightly isolated. Whereas, regardless of the language barrier the midwife still made an effort to converse with the lady, the lady would have a more positive experience. Nurses and midwifes require similar education up until their university courses, their training and knowledge contribute to providing a positive experience by learning about equality, diversity and individualââ¬â¢s rights within a health and social care setting. Their knowledge of how diversity benefits society in general and the NHS in particular means that they respect everyone as individuals. Nurses and midwives understanding laws surrounding human rights, the Equality Act Etc. hanges their methods of providing care in a way that is focused on providing a positive experience for all service users. Nurses and midwives have to register with the NMC, this contributes to providing a positive care experience for service users because they know the people they have looking after them have to keep up to date on their personal and professional development in order to carry on practicing, that they have a council they are accountable to and that first of all being registered means that the NMC have approved them as a registered nurse or midwife. A midwifeââ¬â¢s competency in her field contributes to providing a positive experience for service users because a midwife is the most frequent point of contact for parents-to-be and so must be able to answer their questions, share their knowledge and skills with patients, their families and friends and make sure their needs are recognized by the rest of the care team, this means efficiently sharing information with other professions within the multidisciplinary team, ensuring continuity of care. Care base values contribute towards providing a positive experience. These are values such as; having the right to choice, this could be something as simple as having a choice between different food options, clothes to wear, pain reliefâ⬠¦etc. A pregnant lady has the choice to make a birth plan, where she can choose where to have the baby, in a pool, hospital or at home, she can say which pain relief she would prefer or none at all. This makes her time as a service user a positive experience because sheââ¬â¢s had the choice and control. risk assessments, these are important and necessary under law and they help healthcare workers to identify and problems that could occur and take steps to minimise the risks. This contributes towards a positive care experience for both the professional and the service user, ensuring their protection and safety. Staff being trained regularly contributes to providing a positive experience for service users because all the knowledge needed is kept fresh in the professionalââ¬â¢s mind, keeping them up to date on new legislation, policies and procedures, keeping them competent. Consultations with patients to discuss what to do going forward, to inform and give professional advice contributes to providing a positive experience because the service users feel informed, they can have their questions and queries answered and itââ¬â¢s a time for them to gain reassurance where available. Patient confidentiality helps to provide a positive experience because service users can be assured that their information is being kept secure and only those who need to know can access their records. Promoting equality, diversity and individualââ¬â¢s rights means that everybody is treated with dignity and respect, they have equal access to medical care wherever needed helping to eliminate discrimination. This provides a positive experience for service users because regardless of age, gender, sexuality, race, culture, religion they are being treated with the same respect and dignity as anybody else. Personal hygiene contributes to providing a positive experience for service users because being hygienic is a professional requirement as a healthcare worker and being or seeming unclean, untidy would not inspire trust and confidence in a service user. Pulling the curtains around the cubicle helps to protect the service userââ¬â¢s privacy, which makes them feel like they are being treated with dignity and respect and sensitivity, contributing towards a positive experience. 1. D1: Evaluate the requirements of healthcare workers in relation to the provision of a competent workforce for the health sector. A personal attribute necessary for healthcare workers is empathy. Tania Singer, an expert from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences wrote ââ¬Å"in order for there to be empathy a person would have to see that another was in pain, and share in that pain, while knowing that itââ¬â¢s not their own emotion. However, empathy isnââ¬â¢t intrinsically good and pro-socialâ⬠¦ Empathy is a precursor to compassion, but too much of it can lead to antisocial behavior. â⬠This means that it is possible to be too empathetic and when this happens within the health sector it means that too much empathy can make the workforce not competent. However, empathy can change you, it can grant you perspective, wisdom and equip you for future challenges. A healthcare worker would need to have the right balance in order to work competently and contribute to a competent workforce. Another personal attribute essential for healthcare workers is reliability. In order to have a competent workforce, the workforce needs to be a team and so reliability is really essential. Nurses need to feel confident that they can rely on the nurse she/he is handing over to, this confidence comes from reliability. For example, a lot of healthcare workers on shift rotation and poor punctuality not only effects the patients but the other healthcare workers in your team. Being reliably punctual not only refers to turning up on time for shifts and handovers but completing your tasks on time. For example; taking patients samples efficiently and competently in reasonable time so that the patients arenââ¬â¢t waiting longer than necessary while not making them feel rushed or an inconvenience. Colleagues need to be able to rely on you to make the whole process run as smoothly as possible, contributing towards a competent workforce. In conjunction to being reliable as part of a team, a lot of healthcare workers if not all work in multi-disciplinary teams. Being able to work alongside people from different sectors and specialties effectively, contributes towards a competent workforce. When you can communicate with all members of your team to ensure continuity of care for patients or service users you are not only contributing to the overall competency and efficiency of your team but contributing towards a positive care experience for all. However, when working with people from different specialties and sectors it is not uncommon to find those who think greater of themselves, this brings about problems and conflict and can disrupt the competency of the workforce when there are people who are most productive when they can work well together but instead the relationship is forced and tense. Training and education for healthcare workers is constantly updated and adjusted and monitored to ensure that all healthcare workers are getting the most relevant and important education to their job role. No matter what path that is chosen or healthcare role that is taken, all workers in the health sector have had the same basic training on care values, equality, diversity and individualââ¬â¢s rights. Everybody is trained and educated on how discrimination has no place in the NHS or elsewhere and the effects discrimination has on service users, ways of promoting equality, diversity and individualââ¬â¢s rights in a health and social care setting. This training that every healthcare worker takes means that the entire workforce is built upon the same foundational principles of providing high quality care and positive care experiences. This contributes towards a competent workforce because everybody shares the same values and can help to ensure everybody upholds them. Although everybody is trained and educated on these topics some people cannot put their prejudices aside, it is a weakness of this blanket education that it canââ¬â¢t target and change the mindsets of those who may have grown up with discrimination and prejudice being accepted, who then may carry that on throughout their work life. A colleague being accepting of discriminatory practice would be detrimental on the competency of the workforce as it is a colleagueââ¬â¢s duty to report this. Continuing professional development or CPD is a requirement for nurses and midwives to stay on the register to practice. CPD means that throughout their working lives healthcare workers continuously expand on their knowledge and assess ways they could do their job better. This is important to contributing towards a competent workforce because all employees are keeping up to date with relevant education and qualifications, constantly ensuring they are doing their jobs to the best of their abilities, it increases their knowledge, experience and understanding and helps towards improving their job performance. However, although CPD is a requirement that is monitored for some branches of healthcare workers, it is not always followed up or monitored for some. It is also costly and not all employers can afford the latest training and educational courses for all of their employees. Knowledge of record keeping procedures help contribute to a competent workforce because efficiently and properly written patient records are accessed by other, future healthcare workers that are involved with the patient or service user. If the records are not legible, donââ¬â¢t have enough detail, are not relevant or appropriate it is going to have an effect on how the healthcare worker works with their patient. If all records are written and kept following the same policy and procedure for writing patient records all future healthcare workers who work with that patient benefit from the same necessary standard of record. This creates a competent workforce because with knowledge of these policies and procedures, the workforce all work to the same standard and patients benefit from this. A weakness of the policies and procedures of record keeping, all be it to ensure efficiency, is that a guideline is to not be excessive, however sometimes being what others might deem slightly excessive could be one healthcare worker noting something of what seems like small significance at the time, but then another healthcare worker who accesses the records when providing services to that patient in the future could recognise it as a signpost. Possibly the beginning of depression or another mental illness, where then it wasnââ¬â¢t significant enough to be diagnosable, now this healthcare worker can see it has progressed and take necessary action. Overall I think there is a balance to everything, too much empathy can be detrimental to the individual and therefore to the workforce and its competency, strict guidelines and policies can ensure standards are being met, but do they also allow for some things to go unnoticed, personal development is beneficial and necessary with a sector that is constantly evolving but when new qualifications and medical procedures come about does everybody have access to gaining this knowledge in regards to cost and time. There are so many personal attributes and other factors that help to make a competent workforce but also a workforce is made up of diverse individuals from all walks of life who wonââ¬â¢t all have the exact same personal attributes or educations and yet everybody will in some way contribute towards providing a competent workforce.

The History of the Computer Mouse
The History of the Computer Mouse It was technology visionary and inventor Douglas Engelbart (January 30, 1925à ââ¬â July 2, 2013) who revolutionized the way computers worked, turning it from a piece of specialized machinery that only a trained scientist could use to a user-friendly tool that almost anyone can work with. During his lifetime, he invented or contributed to several interactive and user-friendly devices such as the computer mouse, Windows operating system, computer videoà teleconferencing, hypermedia,à groupware,à email, theà Internetà and much more. Making Computing Less Cumbersome Most of all, though, he was known for inventing the computer mouse. Engelbart conceived of the rudimentary mouse while attending a conference on computer graphics, where he started thinking about how to improve interactive computing. In the early days of computing, users typed codes and commands to make things happen on monitors. Engelbart thought an easier way was to link the computerââ¬â¢s cursor to a device with two wheels- one horizontal and one vertical. Moving the device on a horizontal surface would allow the user to position the cursor on the screen. Engelbartââ¬â¢s collaborator on the mouse projectà Bill English built a prototype- a hand-held device carved out of wood, with a button on the top. In 1967, Engelbartââ¬â¢s company SRI filed for theà patent on the mouse, although the paperwork identified it a little differently as x,y position indicator for a display system. The patent was awarded in 1970. Computer Mice Hits the Market Before long, computers designed to work with a mouse were released. Among the first was the Xerox Alto, which went on sale in 1973. A team at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich liked the concept as well and built their own computer system with a mouse called theà Lilith computer, sold from 1978 to 1980. Perhaps thinking they were on to something, Xerox soon followed up withà theà Xerox 8010, which featured a mouse, ethernet networking and e-mail among various innovative technologies that have since become standard. à à But it wasnt untilà 1983à that the mouse started to go mainstream. It was that year that Microsoft updated the MS-DOS program Microsoft Word to make it mouse-compatible and developed the first PC-compatible mouse.à Computer manufacturers such as Apple, Atari and Commodore would all follow suit by debuting mouse compatible systems as well. à Tracking Ball and Other Advancements Like other present forms of computer technology, the mouse has evolved significantly. In 1972, English developed the ââ¬Å"track ball mouseâ⬠that allowed users to control the cursor by rotating a ball from a fixed position. One interesting enhancement is technology that enables wireless devices, a fact that makes Engelbarts recollection of an early prototype almost quaint. We turned it around so the tail came out the top. We started with it going the other direction, but the cord got tangled when you moved your arm, he said.à For an inventor who grew up on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon and had hoped his achievements would add to the collective intelligence of the world, the mouse has come a long way. It would be wonderful,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"if I can inspire others, who are struggling to realize their dreams, to say if this country kid could do it, let me keep slogging away.

Top 10 Ways To Improve Your Daily Commute That You Hate
Top 10 Ways To Improve Your Daily Commute That You Hate Commuting can be terrible- an annoying, uncomfortable waste of time. But it is also an opportunity to multitask in your busy life. Whether youââ¬â¢re driving or taking public transport (or even walking or biking), here are 10 ways you can turn a negative into a positive. 1. Listen to PodcastsTake a little downtime and catch up on all the reading you arenââ¬â¢t doing. Try a podcast or even an audiobook (on headphones or your car stereo). Your commute time will fly by and youââ¬â¢ll learn stuff! Plus youââ¬â¢ll get all the pleasure of reading without having to have your hands free.2. Discover New MusicBored of your same old Spotify playlists? Tired of your music and not sure where to turn for your new favorite tunes? Use your commute to try new artists. If you have wi-fi access while commuting, try a streaming station. If not, make a list of bands you hear about on the radio or at work and look for them on Spotify and download a playlist to your phone. If you like it, keep it! If not, delete!3. Practice Self CareYour commute might be the only time you have ââ¬Å"to yourselfâ⬠in the week. Make yourself a priority and do something for your mental well being. Try doing gratitude journaling exercises, or just thinking about things that are going really well in your life. Try a simple meditation technique. Or deep breathing. Try giving yourself time to read something for pleasure and tune the rest of the world out- provided you donââ¬â¢t miss your stop. Or use the time to connect via phone or email (provided you arenââ¬â¢t driving) to a friend or family member you donââ¬â¢t get to see enough. If all else fails, just try to decompress a bit and cut your stress.4. Leave Earlier So You Can Slow DownGive yourself a little extra time so youââ¬â¢re not always racing to be on time. If you know you can take your time, you can linger a bit and smell the roses, so to speak- or the coffee! Take a moment to sit and sip a latte. Or enjoy not being pa nicked when you run into traffic. Slowing down a little can really be a grounding way to start your day.5. Check in With Your Work ProgressMaybe evaluating your progress weekly is too daunting a task. But if youââ¬â¢re stuck on a train or in traffic, you can always do a little self-review and see how you did meeting your goals that day. And strategize how you can improve tomorrow. Make sure youââ¬â¢re actually working through your top priorities, and not just spending your day on less important stuff.6.à Mix Up Your Route Once in a WhileIf your commute is too long or annoying, try to find a better workaround! Thinking outside your rut can actually give your brain a boost, and you might just find a way to make your life that much more pleasant! Keep in mind a longer route thatââ¬â¢s less annoying or has fewer stops could make all the difference.7. Brainstorm Solutions to Your ProblemsUse the time to brainstorm or troubleshoot problems at home or at work. Take advantage of being alone with your own thoughts and start strategizing. You never know, the next big answer might come while youââ¬â¢re just spacing out and giving your brain a break.8. Sit in SilenceMaybe your life moves too fast and youââ¬â¢re already optimizing every waking moment to get the most out of your time. Maybe you read and listen and engage too much. Maybe you try to cram too much in. Try turning off your phone, your music, putting away that book or magazine and just sit there not doing anything at all. Concentrate only on getting where you need to go safely. You and your fellow commuters will all benefit.9. MeditateBe present in the moment. You donââ¬â¢t need special props or techniques. Just be where you are, take a few breaths, and maybe shut your eyes. Give your brain the recharge it deserves.10.à Ask If You Can Skip ItAll that said, if you have the opportunity to work remotely, or could convince your boss, then you wouldnââ¬â¢t have to commute every day. Make the argument about how much more productive you could be in that time. Itââ¬â¢s always worth a shot! If thatââ¬â¢s not an option, consider moving closer, or carpooling. Anything to condense or cut out this part of your daily grind.

M3A1 - Essay Example This implies that the firmââ¬â¢s current assets exceed its current liabilities. The current ratio and quick acid ratio of the company after the 2nd quarter of 2000 were 5.92 and 3.29. Both ratios are outstanding due to the fact that they exceed the 1.0 threshold (Garrison & Noreen, 2003). Honest Tea is in a good position to pay off its short term debt. During 1999 the firm was able to turn its inventory 2.50 times during the year. The debt ratio and debt to equity ratio of the company demonstrate that the firm has not incurred in long term financing options. Case study analysis questions: 1) Does the Tea market appear to be attractive as of the year 2000? Explain by referencing relevant metrics and information. The Tea market appears to be attractive for the year 2000. Tea is one of the fastest growing drinks in the United States due to its unique attributes. The competition in the tea market is not as severe as the competition in other segments of the drink industry such as in th e carbonated soda sector in which Coca Cola and Pepsi dominate. As of 1999 there were 2,595,500 gallons of tea consumed by the American public or 9.5 gallons per capita. 2) How is Honest Tea doing financially and otherwise? The company needs to obtain sufficient capital to purchase all the raw materials necessary to produce the projected sales of the company and to purchase the machinery and equipment nee ded for the expansion plan of the company. 4) Who has the company approached for financing in the past and were they the "right" investors? Explain. In the past the firm approached its customers to become the investors of the company. The decision to involve customers as investors was not very wise because a lot of them did not have financial knowledge which made it hard for the administration of the company to explain the financial results to them. Also the amount of money the firm obtained using this strategy was not sufficient. 5) What amount of financing appears to be needed to support the future sales projections of $9,000,000 in 2001 and $16,900,000 in 2002? Explain. Based on the fact that the cost of goods sold of the company represented

Agricultural Pollution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Agricultural Pollution - Essay Example Heedless to the consequences of the over production and sole dedication to the corn production, the ground has been deprived of the nutrients it should have to nurture other plants, the water has been polluted with the many chemical dosing of pesticides and fertilizers for corn production, and production of toxic wastes as by-products of corn production and manufacture. Also, over eating of corn for steers, calves and other animals are causing health problems such as mad cow disease thereby affecting human consumers of these meats (Codesmity,2007). Corn derived food products such as corn sweeteners and syrups are causing obesity to the human population. Overwhelming production of corn results to environmental and agricultural pollution and general health degradation for both humans and animals. There are many corn derived products that dominates the market today. Products with corn ingredients such as corn starch, corn oil, lecithin, corn flour, citric acid, glycirides, Chicken nugge ts, margarine, salad dressing, cosmetics, toothpaste, mustard, corn syrup, sweeteners, linoleum, fiberglass and many more are used in the daily activities of man (Collins, D., 2006). USA has wide and dedicated farmlands for corns alone. Farms found such as in Iowa, where around 2 million farms are found are said to produce around 2 bushels of corn yield per acre. Hybrid corns are even developed and promoted which multiplied production to around 200 bushels per acre. Further, the government issued farm bills that subsidized corn farms has further encouraged more American farmers to produce corns alone forgetting all the other crops (Pollan, Michael, 2006, p 32). Corn manufacturers have also widened their research and development to process corn into various products, thus, there are many produced products in the market that includes corn as main ingredient. It is no harm to plant and manufacture corn as indeed there are many products that can be derived from the production of corn. H owever, with the intensified dedication of farmlands to the production of corn has made the balance of nature become skewed. Overwhelming the lands with one crop has degraded the soil due to the lack of nutrients that the single crop production has caused. By nature, corn is a greedy plant as described by both agriculturists and farmers. Planting corns requires intensive need for nitrogen fertilizers as compared with other crops. In fact, an island size ââ¬Å"dead zoneâ⬠has been created in the Mexico Gulf due to the accumulated nitrogen run-off from the corn fields into the water. It also requires more pesticides to drive out pests and have them grow to their desired output (Penguin Group USA, 2013). Due to this chemical application, air and water are inclined to be polluted with chemicals from fertilizers and pesticides. Water is then contaminated affecting nearby areas relying on the body of water for their daily use. In addition, massive corn production has forced many man ufacturers to include corn ingredients in almost all products thereby making these goods cheaper against the others. Thus, these food products, mostly composed of sweeteners are more easily consumed by the public causing obesity to almost majority of the population. Ergo, the massive and intensified corn production due to the single crop production of corn in many parts of the USA, agricultural pollution and soil degradation is indeed inevitable affecting the general health. There is no harm in corn production, but too much dedication of single handed crop production of this plant is not healthy. Soil needs to be planted with various crops in order to gain diverse nutrients necessary for the soil condition. Waters need to be free from pollutants derived from fertilizers

A Man For All Seasons Essays -- essays research papers
The 16th century was a time of political upheaval, a time of conflict and corruption â⬠¦ and a time of heroes? All these elements are visibly present in Boltââ¬â¢s book, A Man for All Seasons. As I was reading this story I was thinking that it could probably apply to our day and age but that begged the question. Why did Robert Bolt decide to use a 16th century character rather than a present time period character and setting? I believe that Bolt chose this man and his era because there things that he liked abut the man, there was no shortage of conflict and the he was worthy of being a hero. He fits into one of the archetype heroes. These three things I will touch upon in my seminar and I hope that my ideas will prove to be informative and enlightening. à à à à à One of the main reasons that Robert Bolt probably chose 16th century Thomas More as his hero for A Man for all Seasons was that he liked his personality. By that I mean that as Bolt wrote about More, he discovered more and more things that he found admirable about the man. At the outset, Robert Bolt was looking for a person who had a strong idea of who he is because this is what Bolt thinks is necessary to be a hero and this is exactly the type of man that Thomas More is. More saw in himself something that was his only and he was that it was something that allowed him to live life with confidence in himself. Only when he was denied that way of life was he able to accept his fate of death. Robert Bolt comments on this on page 13 of the preface. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦who nevertheless found something in himself without which life was valueless and when that was denied him, he was able to grasp his death.â⬠This shows that Thomas knew that he had a sense of identity that no one else and he knew how important it was. à à à à à After Robert Bolt selected this man, he began to write and realised many more things about Thomas More, which had drawn him to the 16th century character. One of the things that Bolt found out was Moreââ¬â¢s sense of self. He remarks on this on page 12 of the preface. ââ¬Å"At any rate, Thomas More, as I wrote about him, became for me a man with an adamantine sense of his own self.â⬠Robert Bolt went back to this era long past because of that trait but it was as he wrote about him that he discovered just how strong his sense of identity was. à à à à à B... ...e me, Alice, that in silence is my safety under the law, but my silence must be absolute, it must extend to you.â⬠(P56) He has found that so long he doesnââ¬â¢t give any indication to his opinion, hey cannot do anything to him legally. ââ¬Å"MORE: Thereââ¬â¢ll be no trial, they have no case.â⬠(P85) When he is asking his family to leave the country, he knows that he has protected himself to the best of his abilities. He should be safe except for the fact that he is dealing with a corrupt King who considers himself above the law. à à à à à Is there any way to do a play such as this in the 20th century? Evidently, Robert Bolt thought not and after analysing the story further, I have come to realise that he is right. The elements of the story, which were present in the 16th century, are not present in the 20th. There also may have been no one in this century that Robert Bolt liked enough and with the right characteristics. And of course, there is not enough conflict for one man to face as there was in that time. I believe that there are men (And women.) who would be able to face the problems that Thomas More had to face but we can all be thankful that there is no need for it.

An Analysis of Developing American Literature Essay
An Analysis of Developing American Literature ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkleâ⬠by Washington Irving and ââ¬Å"The Slaughter of the Pigeonsâ⬠by James Fennimore Cooper demonstrate several distinct American characteristics. Irving focuses on New Yorkââ¬â¢s Hudson River while discussing the settings of ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkle. New York is probably the most identifiable state in the U. S. and is recognized by its Statue of Liberty welcoming foreigners into its prideful country. While Irving discusses natureââ¬â¢s beauty in similar ways in the U. S. by giving a page description on a simple frozen lake in Somerville. In ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkleâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Slaughter of the Pigeonsâ⬠the three main American characteristics in these short stories are: power of nature, value of the common man, and growing nationalism. Nature can be a powerful concept. In ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkleâ⬠there is a lovely description of the Hudson River which opens the story. ââ¬Å"Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill mountains. They are dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river swelling up to a noble height and lording it over the surrounding country. In ââ¬Å"The Slaughter of the Pigeonsâ⬠there is a similar description. ââ¬Å"Large flocks of wild geese were seen passing over the country, which hovered, for a time, around the hidden sheet of water, apparently searching for a resting-place; and then, on finding themselves excluded by the chill covering, would soar away to the north, filling the air with discordant screams, as if venting their complaints a the tardy operations of Nature. â⬠Nature is very important to Washington Irving and James Cooper. Along with nature, also present is the value of the common man. Values had certainly changed when Rip awoke from his century nap. In a state of confusion, he yells, ââ¬Å"Alas gentlemen,â⬠cried Rip, somewhat dismayed, ââ¬Å"I am a poor quiet man, a native of the place, and a loyal subject of the King- God bless him! â⬠People around Rip thought what he was acting treasonous. Values of America had changed and now included the concept of voting. Along with American values, came values of nature represented in ââ¬Å"The Slaughter f the Pigeonsâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬Ës better for you, maybe, Billy Kirby,â⬠replied the indignant old hunter, ââ¬Å"and all them that donââ¬â¢t know how to put a ball down a rifle-barrel, or how to bring it up again with a true aim; but itââ¬â¢s wicked to be shooting into flocks in this wasty mannerâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ We must not waste what we are given in this world, and we must embrace change as well. As long as that change is bettering us as American citizens as shown in ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkleâ⬠. There is also a sense of growing nationalism embodied in both stories. In Irvingââ¬â¢s short story there is a sign hung in honor of General Washington representing the good that heââ¬Ës done for the country. ââ¬Å"The red coat was changed for one of blue and buff; a sword was held in the hand instead of a scepter; the head was decorated with a cocked hat, and underneath was printed in large characters. â⬠Nationalism by definition is having pride in oneââ¬â¢s country. Whether pride be in local government or in nature itself, in ââ¬Å"The Slaughter of the Pigeons,â⬠Leather-Stocking believes that all life is valuable in this country. ââ¬Å"Put an end, Judge, to your clearings. Ainââ¬Ët the woods His work as well as the pigeons? Use, but donââ¬Ët waste. Wasnââ¬Ët the woods made for the beasts and birds to harbor in? â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ In ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkleâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Slaughter of the Pigeonsâ⬠the three main American characteristics in these short stories are: power of nature, value of the common man, and growing nationalism. They are each represented in distinct ways but clearly show the importance of America and its impact on the Western Civilization that we know today. Whether stressing the importance of government change for the better in ââ¬Å"Rip Van Winkleâ⬠or holding true to nature in ââ¬Å"The Slaughter of the Pigeonsâ⬠we all hold a part in the shaping American society. The real task is holding the past with one hand while reaching for the future with the other and never letting one side pull too hard.
